COEUR d’ALENE — Despite sophomore Katelyn Matteson going off for 30 points, Clark Fork was unable to hang with No. 1 seed Lakeside in the 1A Division II District 1 title game, falling 64-46 Thursday night.
The loss brings the Lady Cats (10-11) season to a close.
In the end, the Knights’ experience proved to be key as they rode a 25-10 second quarter to a state berth.
“You can see that there is that gap,” head coach Jordan Adams said, “and [Lakeside] plays year-round and they’ve got juniors and seniors and we don’t play year-round and we have two seniors, two freshmen and a sophomore [starting].”
Matteson found her groove tonight and scored all of Clark Fork’s 16 fourth-quarter points.
Senior Ellie Kiebert was named the North Star League MVP after the game and senior Sara Hathaway also received all-league honors.
Kiebert had 7 points and Hathaway added 5.
Adams was proud of what her team was able to accomplish this season.
“I know our overall wins and losses was better last year,” she said, “but I can’t base the season off of that ... sometimes you just got to look at how much improvement you’ve had throughout the year.”
Adams is looking forward to the future of her team and watching the young players who had such a big impact this year continue to grow.
“When you’ve got kids like Ellie and Sara to look up to and kind of pave that road and then you’ve got as much potential as we’ve got coming up ... it’s exciting.”
