MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake girls basketball picked up its ninth straight win, taking down Wenatchee 75-20. The Chiefs end the regular season atop the Columbia Basin Big Nine, and will host Sunnyside in the District 6 championship on Friday.
On senior night, the Moses Lake upperclassmen came ready to play as the five-senior starting lineup took a 20-point advantage before the Panthers made it on the scoreboard. Camille Carpenter had eight points and four steals in the first quarter to lead Moses Lake.
The Chiefs led 23-3 going into the second quarter.
Moses Lake spread the attack after taking a comfortable lead in the opening quarter, as everyone on the team scored in the win. The Chiefs stretched their lead to 27, up 38-11 at the break.
The Chiefs held Wenatchee to just four points in the third, causing trouble for the Panthers in the paint with three blocks in the quarter. Moses Lake took a 40-point edge into the fourth quarter at 55-15.
Seven Moses Lake players scored in the fourth as the underclassmen sent their seniors off with a bang, easily taking care of business on their home court.
Madisyn Clark led the Chiefs with 15 points, adding five assists, four steals and a block. Camille Carpenter finished with 14 to go with a team-high six steals, four rebounds and one block. Meagan Karstetter finished with 14, chipping in three boards and an assist.
Moses Lake head coach Matt Strophy said after the game that they got “exactly what they wanted” in the win on Friday.
“We didn’t want a letdown coming out of last week’s West Valley game that took us a lot of effort, but we played well there,” he said. “To bring that intensity and drive into this game, knowing we beat them by 40 last time, sometimes you can have a little bit of a mental letdown. Our girls were dialed in.”
Strophy said he was glad to see the seniors rewarded with a big win. The Chiefs coach said he can’t say enough about these girls, who’ve stuck it out to reach this point.
“These girls are my daughter’s age, I’ve known them since they were in second, third, fourth grade, so it’s a social group for me, personally,” Strophy said. “It shows a lot of inner toughness and resolve to work through things that don’t go your way throughout your career, but you stick with it and you’re rewarded with a night like tonight.”
Hopefully, Strophy said, this postseason run will be one they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.
Moving forward, Strophy said one nice thing is they can start to focus in on teams one at a time. The Moses Lake coach said he’d take a day to celebrate and then hop right back into film on Sunday.
“We’ll just get them dialed in, and we’ll focus on that one team,” Strophy said. “And then once we win that game, we can do the same thing with our opponent in the round of 16.”
