WEST DISTRICT WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Gregerson triumphs; NIC qualifies all 10 to nationals

COOS BAY, Ore. — Returning All-American Hunter Gregerson won at 184 pounds, and North Idaho College qualified all 10 wrestlers — including seven freshmen — to nationals Sunday at the NJCAA West District Championships at Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Gregerson, who dropped from 197 last year, went 3-0 on Sunday with a major decision and two decisions.

In the championship match, Gregerson defeated Romeo Manue of Clackamas, 9-3, avenging a loss to Manue in a recent dual at NIC — one in which the teams tied, but the Cardinals won on criteria.

“Definitely there was motivation to prove he was better than that kid,” first-year NIC coach Mike Sebaaly said of Gregerson, who was eighth at nationals last year. “He was ready ... he’s a returning All-American and he knows it’s time to step it up.”

Four NIC wrestlers placed second — freshman Salvador Silva (149), sophomore Izaiah Duran (165), freshman Alan Badley (174) and sophomore Micah Tynanes (197).

Five Cardinal wrestlers placed third — freshman Andres Lucero (125), freshman Isaac Lopez (133), freshman Larry Johnson (141), freshman Navarro Nanpuya (157) and freshman Cohle Feliciano (285).

The top three placers in each weight advance to the NJCAA tournament March 6-7 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. A handful of wild-card berths were awarded to fourth-place finishers.

“More than anything else it was important to keep all 10 guys alive, and have a chance to have 10 All-Americans,” Sebaaly said. “ We didn’t necessarily wrestle our best, but we found a way to survive.”

Clackamas, of Oregon City, Ore., won its seventh straight regional title with 158.5 points. NIC, which last won a regional title in 2013, was second with 130 points.

2013 was also the last year NIC won a national title.

“I think we’ve got 10 guys that can score points at nationals,” Sebaaly said, noting that nine of his wrestlers are ranked in the top eight in their weight classes.

To challenge for a national title, “we’ve got to have 10 guys score points, and get eight or nine on the podium,” Sebaaly said. “I don’t think we’ve wrestled our best yet.”

TEAM SCORES — 1, Clackamas 158.5. 2, North Idaho 130. 3, Southwestern Oregon 101. 4 (tie), Highline, Umpqua 86.
