Cardinal men fend off CC Spokane in overtime

SPOKANE — Nate Pryor and Jaden Dewar made the big plays down the stretch, and the North Idaho College Cardinals clinched the East Region title with a 103-100 victory over Community Colleges of Spokane in Northwest Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at Spokane Community College.

Dewar finished with 28 points for NIC (26-1, 14-0 NWAC), which will not compete in the postseason as the Cardinals are in the first year of a three-year postseason ban.

A free throw by Austin White of Spokane (22-6, 12-3) with 32 seconds left put the Sasquatch up 100-99.

Pryor answered with a driving layin with 19 seconds left to put NIC up by one. Pryor then deflected a pass that was intercepted by Dewar with 7.4 seconds left. Dewar sank two free throws.

Spokane got a good look at a 3, but Jamal Alstrom’s try bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Austin White led CCS with 27 points. Garrett White, a sophomore from North Idaho Christian, added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Late in regulation, Dewar took a kickout pass from Yusuf Mohamed and sank a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:07 left to put the Cardinals up 87-84.

Jaron Williams of CC Spokane tied it with a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left, and NIC missed a 3 at the buzzer.

NIC scored the first five points in overtime — a basket by Dewar, and a 3 by Mohamed.

A pair of 3s by Austin White gave CCS a 99-96 lead with a minute to play.

NIC’s James Carlson, a sophomore from Lake City, answered with a 3 to tie it at 99.

NIC has now won 31 straight games in conference play.

NIC plays host to Yakima Valley on Saturday.

SPOKANE — Halle Eborall, a sophomore from Lake City, had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals in a Northwest Athletic Conference win over the Sasquatch at Spokane Community College.

NIC’s win, coupled with a loss by Treasure Valley at Columbia Basin on Wednesday, clinched a playoff spot for NIC (15-10, 9-5 NWAC).

Demi Randall, a sophomore from Lewiston, scored 14 points for NIC, which hosts Yakima Valley on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Dejah Wilson, a freshman from Lake City, had seven rebounds and three assists for Spokane (11-13, 4-11).
