NAMPA — When you get knocked down, you’ve got two choices.

Get up, clean yourself off and move on.

Or you can remain down.

Thursday was one of those nights where, try as they might, Post Falls just couldn’t get itself back up.

Freshman Capri Sims had six points, four rebounds and three steals for the Trojans, who fell behind early and lost to the Timberline Wolves of Boise 50-29 in the first round of the state 5A basketball tournament on Thursday at the Ford Idaho Center.

For Sims, it was only her third start on varsity for Post Falls (13-11).

“It was a little nervewracking at first,” said Sims, who played most of the season on the junior varsity. “It’s a big place here (at the Idaho Center), but we just have to go out, have confidence and work our hardest. Even when you get beat down, you’ve got to get back up.”

Post Falls will face Rigby (19-6) in a loser-out game at 2 p.m. PST.

Timberline (22-3), which outrebounded Post Falls 44-25, faces Rocky Mountain (16-9) in Friday’s second semifinal.

“The biggest thing is that they killed us on the boards,” said Post Falls coach Marc Allert, in his ninth season. “That’s a very, very good team. Their big kids are physical, and it’s not a very good matchup for us. I thought Capri battled as hard as she could, but their size overwhelmed us a little bit inside. They were getting baskets in transition and we were trying to rebound and weren’t getting back on defense. And that combination was bad.”

Ava Ranson scored 13 points and Sophie Glancey 12 points for Timberline, which finished 23 of 47 from the floor. Post Falls was 11 of 48.

“They got a lot of putbacks,” Allert said. “For us, I thought we were a little tentative offensively. We didn’t shoot well, didn’t play inside/out like we wanted to.”

It is Post Falls’ first appearance at state since winning the 2018 championship over Eagle.

“A lot of these kids haven’t been here before,” Allert said. “We battled, but were a little outmatched today. We talked about learning from adversity and what we’re going to take from this and bring back tomorrow and use that to get better.”
