NAMPA — Lexie Heath can’t shoot the ball when she’s cold.
Just can’t do it.
Fortunately, she was rather warm on Friday afternoon.
Heath, a sophomore reserve guard, hit 4 of 5 3-pointers and scored 16 points for Post Falls in a 69-53 win over the Rigby Trojans in a loser-out game in the state 5A basketball tournament at the Ford Idaho Center.
“I just started to get into a flow, and it just flows from there,” Heath said. “I just tried to get really warm during warmups, so I was trying to move during warmups.”
And the rest of the Post Falls team followed, going 8 of 11 from the 3-point line in the first half in taking a 41-17 halftime lead. Post Falls forced 17 of Rigby’s 27 turnovers in the first half.
“Our focus was basically on the defensive end today,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “Usually when we play good defense, our offense kind of flows and gets some easy baskets. We did a great job of going inside/out and most our 3s were throwing the ball in and kicking it back out, so that’s where those came from. The guards made them, but the posts are making the plays.”
Post Falls (14-11), appearing at state with a new lineup since its last visit in 2018 when it won the state title, shot 11 of 48 in its tournament opener on Thursday against Timberline of Boise. The Trojans will face Boise (16-9) in the consolation championship game today at 9 a.m. PST at Ridgevue High in Nampa.
“We talked about yesterday’s game and learned from it,” Allert said. “I think the atmosphere and environment got to them yesterday. Once they saw it, they handled it a lot better today. We got off to a good start today and saw the ball go through, so it was some good things.”
Freshman Capri Sims had 14 points and four rebounds, junior Dylan Lovett 10 points and senior Katie Fleming five assists for Post Falls.
“When Lexie makes baskets, it makes things easier for everybody else,” Allert said. “She starts hitting some 3s and it opens it up for Capri to hit some and Dylan to hit some. So it builds off each other.”
Lovett and Laney Smith each hit two 3s.
Tylie Jones scored 24 points for Rigby, which finishes 19-7.
