Together we can do more. These words have been the heartbeat of Pine Street Woods since the project’s inception. The partnerships that have blossomed around Sandpoint’s new community forest are almost too many to list.

Of special note is the collaboration that brought to life one of the crown jewels of the project. After years of scheming and dreaming between Sandpoint Nordic Club and Kaniksu Land Trust around the concept of cross-country ski trails at Pine Street Woods, a very special grant opportunity came to light in 2019, and already a remarkable new facility is tucked into the forest at the recently opened Pine Street Woods.

The Pine Street Woods Outdoor Recreation Center offers a hospitable welcome to visitors, regardless of season. The center features a warm, dry community space to gather and shelter from inclement weather, a rental desk stocked with cross-country ski and snowshoe equipment, and a friendly, knowledgeable part-time staff person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends. Don’t have your own cross-country skis? No problem. Always wanted to try snowshoeing? Here’s your chance. Wondering about which trails to explore? Just ask!

The project seemingly unfolded in the blink of an eye but, behind the scenes, non-profit staff and volunteers from Sandpoint Nordic Club, Kaniksu Land Trust, and others dedicated countless hours in support of the grant proposal and its implementation. The building was constructed according to a limited budget and a compressed timeline under the auspices of local construction company Idagon Homes. A stunning porch was later added by Collin Begs Design Build Timber Framing. Significant project support was also provided by Avista Corporation, Idaho Forest Group and countless area suppliers, subcontractors and builders.

And there is more to come. Future plans for the facility include the addition of a rental fleet of mountain bikes as well as seasonal programming to get you outside and exploring. The objective of the project is to remove barriers to outdoor recreation and connection with nature for all members of the community, be they related to equipment access, knowledge, safety, season, or terrain. The partners behind the project are intent on fulfilling that vision to the greatest extent possible.

Regardless of age, ability, or time of year, there is an adventure awaiting you at Pine Street Woods. Sandpoint Nordic Club and Kaniksu Land Trust invite you to visit the newly completed Pine Street Woods Outdoor Recreation Center to experience the power of partnership beating strong in your community.
