COLLEGE WOMEN: UI’s Newlee notches 300th D-I win

Freshman Beyonce Bea scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Idaho coach Jon Newlee recorded his 300th NCAA Division I win as the Vandals beat Sacramento State 96-88 on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif.

Newlee, in his 18th season as a Division I coach, is now 300-252. He is 207-170 in his 12th season at Idaho, following six seasons at Idaho State where he went 93-82.

Lizzy Klinker added 14 points and 10 rebounds for Idaho (16-8, 11-5). Sac State dropped to 8-18, 6-11.

Idaho hosts Northern Colorado on Thursday.

No. 13 Gonzaga 64, Pepperdine 50: At Malibu, Calif., Jill Townsend scored 12 of her 13 points in the a game-changing third quarter to propel Gonzaga (27-2, 16-1 West Coast Conference) over Pepperdine (14-12, 8-8).

Townsend, who missed her only two shots in the first half when she picked up two fouls, helped the Bulldogs breakaway from a 26-23 lead at intermission with a 23-9 advantage in the third quarter. This was the 16th game this season Gonzaga, which beat the Waves 70-36 in the first meeting, did not allow more than 50 points.

Melody Kempton, a sophomore from Post Falls High, added 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs, Jessie Loera added 10 points and Jenn Wirth grabbed 10 rebounds.

Townsend made her first basket on Gonzaga’s first possession in the third quarter and picked up her third foul 21 seconds later. She stayed in the game and had another inside basket before her personal 8-0 run late in the quarter. Townsend, who fouled out with 2:02 to play, had a pair of 3-pointers and a layup. Kempton’s layup in the closing seconds made it 49-32.

Gonzaga wraps up the regular season next Saturday at Portland.

Northern Arizona 63, Eastern Washington 58: At Flagstaff, Ariz., the Eagles (4-21, 3-13 Big Sky) trailed by 16 points heading into the fourth quarter before rallying in their loss to the Lumberjacks (15-11, 12-5).

Bella Cravens scored 18 of her career-high 28 points in the fourth quarter for EWU. She also had 10 rebounds.

Eastern plays host to Southern Utah on Thursday.

Gonzaga clinches tie for WCC crown

Jenn Wirth scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season as No. 15 Gonzaga clinched a tie for its 16th West Coast Conference title with a 53-46 win over Santa Clara on Saturday before a sold-out crowd of 6,000 at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane.
