A Kalispell man involved in a recent standoff with Flathead County law officers is facing a felony charge after he allegedly tried to run over a woman with a pickup truck.

Steven Personette, 35, is charged with one felony count of assault with a weapon.

Authorities allege Personette attempted to run over his girlfriend during a Feb. 12 incident.

According to court documents, Kalispell Police Department officers responded to the area of Fourth Street West and Sixth Avenue West for a reported assault. One officer spoke to the victim, who said she and her boyfriend, Personette, were fighting when he allegedly hit her with his truck. The officer reported seeing bruises and marks on the woman’s face.

The officer then spoke to a witness who lives in the area, who said she watched out her window and saw a woman driving a white pickup following a man who was walking on Fourth Street. The witness said the truck stopped, the woman slid into the passenger seat and the man got into the driver’s seat and started “kicking the crap out” of the woman. The woman then got out of the truck and ran.

The witness further detailed how she watched as the man accelerated and drove the truck toward the woman in an attempt to run over her. The witness said she saw the truck strike the woman. The witness then yelled at her neighbor to call the police.

The neighbor, who spoke to police, said he heard yelling outside his home and when he went outside, he saw a man walking while yelling and cussing. He said he saw a woman driving a Ford pickup and following the man. The man allegedly opened the driver’s door and kicked the woman through the cab of the truck. The victim then ran from the truck while screaming in a scared manner with the truck chasing her.

The victim told officers she thought Personette was going to kill her. Officers reported the woman had new and old injuries consistent with being assaulted. She was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center for an evaluation.

Officers then located Personette at his home, where a Ford pickup matching the description of the one involved in the incident, was parked in the driveway.

According to information from the Kalispell Police, Personette was taken into custody Feb. 12 at a mobile home park off Whitefish Stage Road following an incident that lasted several hours and involved the Kalispell Police Department and Flathead County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Teams.

When Kalispell police officers arrived on scene, they were informed the suspect had fled. They located the suspect’s vehicle at a residence off Whitefish Stage Road and surrounded the residence. When officers attempted to speak with the suspect, he did not respond to requests to come out of the residence, so the Sheriff’s Office Special Response Teams and Kalispell officers “secured the residence pending a search warrant.”

Tactical team officers then deployed a “distraction device” outside the residence and the suspect voluntarily came out of the residence and was taken into custody without incident or injury to any hostages.

Personette faces a maximum term of 20 years in the Montana State Prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
