Logging finished for Humbird

Medino Naccarato and the Bombino brothers have completed logging for the Humbird company about nine miles out on the West Branch. They put in about a million feet of logs.

90 Years Ago — 1930

From town and the lake

It is reported that the Union Oil company will soon erect a super service station on the lots recently purchased from Mrs. Dora Charbonneau.

Miss Rochet and Stewart Coolin skated to Coolin from the Outlet Saturday. The recent snow will spoil the skating for a while again.

80 Years Ago — 1940

High school library a good one

High school librarian, Ben Phipps, made a trip to Moscow to visit the library to secure information asked for my teachers and students that could not be had from the school library. Mr. Phipps said the librarian there told him that evidently our library was far superior to the average high school library.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Outlet Dam authorized

The bill authorizing construction of a low dam at the outlet of Priest Lake received approval from both the state House and Senate. The appropriation is for $3,500, which will be enlarged by other funding. The dam will be three feet high in order to maintain the lake level at low water period.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Guidance program developed

The guidance program of Priest River High School dates back to the 1956-57 school year. That’s when L.W. Pattie assumed the job and title of Guidance Director. The guidance program which Mr. Pattie developed has three major phases: educational guidance, vocational guidance, and personal guidance.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Ten want to be Miss Priest River

Ten candidates in the Miss Priest River contest were guests of the Panhandle Junior Federated Club at a luncheon held in their honor at city hall. The ten young ladies are: Jackie Biss, Kathy Deinhardt, Marcia Elkins, Pam Fillis, Chris Holley, Karen Keough, Cathy Krizenesky, Maureen McClure, Kathy Turnbull, and Rae Nell Van Vleet.

It’s Leap Year

The Gregorian Intercalary day is almost on us again — in other words, it’s Leap Year. Every calendar worth its salt ever invented by man has always included some sort of leap day, simply to take into account the way the world works. It takes the earth 365 and 1/4 days to circle the sun. Without a leap day every four years, Christmas would be celebrated on a hot summer day in a few centuries.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Council approves annexation plans

Based on Planning and Zoning recommendations, the Priest River City Council approved plans to begin annexation proceedings of properties bordering the city in three different areas. Properties targeted include the Joslyn Pole Company property, land south of the old Priest River dump along the river to the north end of Larch Street, and land near the high school lying outside the city limits.

Organizing to promote library district

A group of 10 library patrons, board members and Friends of the Library met Monday night at the Priest River Public Library to organize a renewed effort to establish a tax-supported library district here. The committee discussed what the boundaries of the district might be, without making any decision. The group will meet again and invites anyone interested to attend. Volunteers are needed to speak to groups to promote the district, said Sandy Babin, who chaired the meeting.
