Irish blessings for parade entries

The Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association is looking for the green. And if you know something about the luck of the Irish, they want you, too.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade with the theme, “Shamrock Sherman,” is set for 4 p.m. March 14. Entries are still being accepted, with some sure to receive an Irish blessing for doing so.

It usually draws a few floats, bands, leprechauns, dancers and alpacas, along with some Irish Setters and Irish wolfhounds.

The parade is limited to 30 entries. Last year’s attracted 22, but it’s often dependent on weather so sunshine could mean more participants.

Entries just need to have an Irish theme — which means they could be green, maybe have a four-leaf clover or perhaps shaped like a pint glass.

“Be decked out for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Emily Boyd with the CDA Downtown Association.

The parade lasts about 20 minutes and goes from Eighth and Sherman to First and Sherman, right past the store All Things Irish, which has a parade entry. It generally brings about 1,000 spectators, and many go in search of a Guinness afterward so pubs can be packed and you’ll probably hear someone singing, “Danny Boy.”

Entry deadline is March 7. Cost is $30 for noncommercial entries and $40 for commercial.

To register, to go www.cdadowntown.com or call 415-0116.

The parade will be without Coeur d’Alene’s comical dance team, the Red Hot Mamas, who will be leaving March 13 for Ireland, where they will be performing in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
