TROY — On Monday, St. Maries couldn’t get anything going offensively in its 2A District 1-2 best-of-3 championship series opener at Troy High.

That wasn’t the case on Tuesday.

Junior guard Brett Stancil hit 6 of 10 3-pointers and scored 20 points as the top-seeded Lumberjacks rolled past the second-seeded Grangeville Bulldogs 48-25 at Troy High to sweep the series 2-0 and claim their sixth straight district title.

St. Maries (17-5), last year’s state runners-up, advances to the state tournament starting next Thursday at Capital High in Boise.

“We wanted to get the tempo into our favor early and created 10 turnovers in the first half,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose team led 25-7 at halftime. “Our presses got to them tonight. We didn’t press enough (Monday) and knew we had to speed the game up and not slow it down.”

Coleman Ross had seven points and three steals, Tristan Gentry six points, six rebounds and four assists and Eli Gibson four assists and three steals for St. Maries, which opens at state against the District 3 (Boise) runner-up next Thursday.

Grangeville (10-11) faces the District 4 (Twin Falls area) champion in a state play-in game on Saturday at McCall-Donnelly.

Lakeside (20-0) jumped out to a 26-8 lead after one quarter, and was up 54-19 at the half.

“They were just ready to play the first half,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “I think they were just amped up to play. Our press worked for the first three quarters.”

Lakeside will play third-seeded Genesis Prep in the championship game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at NIC.

Genesis Prep defeated second-seeded Mullan 68-28.

Mullan finished 8-7.

Cameron Garcia scored 15 points, Josh Constantin 13 for Clark Fork, which finished 6-14.

Two of Lakeside’s closest games this season were against Genesis Prep, victories by 11 and 3 points.

Since Lakeside went undefeated against the other 1A Division II teams in North Star League play this season, Genesis Prep will have to beat the Knights twice to advance to state.

“We’ll be ready for a close game,” Twoteeth said. “It’s going to be a grinder. “I think we’re both ready to play each other again.”
