The last time I checked there were three county commissioners. I was really disappointed with the coverage of the Advisory Vote in your article Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Yes Brooks and Fillios in an election year were dragged kicking and screaming to their vote to allow the public a voice and I am happy they did. Why the exclusion of County Treasurer Steve Matheson who really pushed the issue.
For anyone who has ever dipped their toe in the swamp of politics knows that it’s also a kindergarten sandbox. Play nice, they have to work together. This is why you see people placate each other or go along to get along. Which is no way to do business, it creates a culture of bobble heads and zero dissent.
So kudos to Steve Matheson who threw conventional wisdom out the window, stood up for what was right and pressed the issue in spite of the backlash from commissioners who were more concerned about upsetting mayors and councilmen than the voters. I will give Mr. Fillios credit; we should take it up with our other elected officials as well. Which we will in 2021 when the mayor and three councilmen are up for re-election in Coeur d’Alene.
Back to the point, when the commissioners who say they are against URDs and for advisory votes, I am thankful for a county treasurer who had the integrity to inform the public that advisory votes were an option because I never heard that from Brooks and Fillios.
