SANDPOINT — A mental health evaluation has been ordered in the case of a North Idaho man who racked up 12 criminal charges following a pursuit on Highway 41 last month.

Jarred Lee Butler is charged with marijuana trafficking, in addition to possession of methamphetamine, LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms and an erectile dysfunction medication which was not prescribed to him, according to court documents.

He’s further charged with felony eluding, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

Butler, a 36-year-old St. Maries resident, was arrested after Bonner County sheriff’s deputies disabled the tires on the 2012 BMW he was driving on Jan. 17. Law enforcement began pursuing the vehicle in Spokane County and the crossed into Kootenai and Bonner counties. During the northbound chase, Butler alleged crossed into the southbound lane of travel, forcing other motorists to take evasive action to avoid colliding with his vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Butler attempted to flee the scene on foot near Old Priest River Road, but was apprehended. A search of the vehicle turned up 10 pounds of pot, nearly 4 grams of meth, 6 ounces of mushrooms, 8 tabs of LSD and more than a gram of cocaine. A .22-caliber revolver and prescription medication reported stolen in Pend Oreille County were also recovered from the vehicle, court documents indicate.

Butler was barred from possessing firearms due to felony drug convictions in Ada and Kootenai counties, a criminal complaint said. Butler is being prosecuted as a persistent violator, which would add five years to life to the underlying sentences if he’s convicted.

Deputy Public Defender Janet Whitney filed a motion for Butler to undergo a mental health evaluation due to concerns about his ability to assist in his own defense. Those concerns emerged after the defense spoke with Butler and his parents, in additional to consulting voluminous medical records, court documents indicate.
