PRIEST RIVER — A pair of Bonner County residents made a citizen’s arrest after allegedly catching a man burglarizing a neighbor’s barn on Wednesday night.

The duo held Matthew Wade Stephenson at gunpoint until Bonner County sheriff’s deputies arrived, according to court documents.

The two men, a father and a son, encountered Stephenson in the 1100 block of Peterson Road after seeing a suspicious vehicle parked a few hundred yards from the neighbor’s property. Stephenson allegedly tried to flee on foot, but the son fired two gunshots into a hillside and ordered him to stop, a probable cause affidavit said.

Stephenson, 44, said he was gathering firewood when he was grabbed and told not to move until law enforcement arrived, the affidavit said. Stephenson said he was gathering firewood at approximately 9:41 p.m. because he works during the day.

The neighboring landowners said they found a John Deere Gator utility vehicle stranded halfway down the driveway. Footprints near the vehicle had a distinctive X on the heel and the middle of the tread, which matched Stephenson’s footwear, according to court documents. Stephenson’s sweatshirt held an operator’s manual to a hydraulic jack that was stolen from the barn and found inside the Gator, court records indicate.

Stephenson is charged with burglary. A preliminary hearing on the felony offense is scheduled for March 11 in Bonner County Magistrate Court.
