- GIRLS BASKETBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lakeland coaches knew the Hawks had it in them.

Perhaps, the Lakeland players learned that for themselves on Thursday.

Darby McDevitt hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime, and Katy Ryan sank a 7-foot baseline jumper with 6 seconds left in overtime for the winning basket as 4A Lakeland rallied to beat the 5A Coeur d’Alene Vikings 56-55 in nonleague play at Viking Court.

It was Lakeland’s first win over Coeur d’Alene since a 46-44 win at Cd’A on Jan. 4, 2005. Coeur d’Alene had beaten the Hawks 16 straight times since, including an 85-58 win at Rathdrum on Nov. 21.

“It gives our coaching staff a little bit of credibility with the players when we keep saying, ‘We’re better than this, and we’re going to play to our potential at some point this year,’” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “The players kind of understood today, and competed as well as they have all year.

“It’s definitely a good win; we got down and we could have stayed down. I think they figured some stuff out out for themselves.”

Ryan finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots for Lakeland (5-9). Addie Kiefer added 13 points, 17 rebounds and three assists.

Lakeland trailed by 14 points in the second quarter, by 10 at the half, got back into the game by outscoring Coeur d’Alene 13-5 in the third quarter, and won despite shooting 10 for 34 from the free throw line.

“It’s the best defensive quarter we’ve had all year,” Seymour said.

Madi Symons scored 14 points, Skylar Burke 13, Tori Younker 12 for Coeur d’Alene (11-3), which returns to action next Friday at Lake City in the Fight for the Fish.

Lakeland plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday.

BOISE — Brooklyn Rewers had 22 points — 20 in the second half — and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves in a loss to the host Wolves in the Timber-Lion tournament at Timberline High.

Timberline (11-1) led 30-14 at halftime and was led by Ava Ranson with 21 points.

“We came out and executed well in the first half, but couldn’t hit shots,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “And it compounded itself. We didn’t go a good job on defense and getting back down the court. It took us 12 minutes to kind of snap into it and really start playing. The girls were resilient and got back into it in the fourth quarter. Playing a team like Timberline exposed us, and kind of woke us up a little.”

Brenna Hawkins had eight rebounds for Lake City (8-3), which faces Eagle today at Timberline High.

After bus breaks down, Lakeland, Coeur d’Alene shine

BOISE — Sometimes, those unplanned breaks wind up helping in the long run.

Lakeland and Coeur d’Alene, traveling together on a charter bus from the area, broke down in Umatilla, Ore. — 262 miles from Boise — and arrived an hour before the first scheduled duals of the night at Borah High.

Lakeland beat Madison of Rexburg 66-6, then handled Borah 72-10.

“I was really impressed with our kids mindset to go out and compete after being on the bus all day,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Things were going smooth, everyone showed up when they were supposed to. We expected to get here, roll around and get a warmup in beforehand. Instead, we pulled in, got right off the bus and onto the scales and wrestled. I was a little worried about them sitting on the bus, but the kids really competed well.”

Also at Borah, Coeur d’Alene beat Borah 78-12 and Madison 61-24.

“We basically just jumped off the bus, weighed in and wrestled,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said.

Christian Paniagua had a pair of pins at 98 pounds for Coeur d’Alene.

“He was a little undersized (at 98) last year,” Moffat said. “He’s not a giant this year by any means, but he wrestled really well today.”

Lakeland and Coeur d’Alene compete at the Rollie Lane Invitational today and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
