COEUR d’ALENE — An allegedly drunk man who sat on the sidewalk and yelled at people in an established Coeur d’Alene neighborhood over the weekend is serving time behind bars.

Mark Mather, 58, of San Jose, Calif., was bloodied and injured Friday when he blocked the sidewalk on the 500 block of West Mill Avenue. When police tried to help him, he allegedly swung at them, kicked them and tried to bite them.

Mather is charged with battery on a police officer, which can carry up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Police said residents called authorities after Mather blocked an entrance to one of the properties in the neighborhood that lies east of U.S. 95 and south of the Ironwood Mall.

Homeowners did not want Mather trespassed, according to a police report, but asked officers to make sure Mather was OK.

According to a police report, Mather’s blood alcohol content was .297. A blood alcohol level of .08 or more is illegal in Idaho. Police said Mather was bruised and bleeding, but he could not tell investigators what had happened to him.

When police asked how much Mather had been drinking, he said, “half.”

When asked to clarify, Mather said “half of anything,” according to a police report.

Because Mather could not provide police with the address of a safe place to stay, officers took him to Kootenai Health.

“Mark was not able to care for himself due to his current level of intoxication,” Officer Zachary Johns wrote in a report.

He fought with police attempting to kick, hit and bite them, before becoming docile, according to a report.

“Mark started to lean towards me then made a kissing sound with his mouth,” Johns wrote. “He stated he was not going to bite me, but in fact kiss me on the hand.”

He was eventually arrested for swinging and striking an officer. His bail was set at $300.
