ROYAL CITY — Red Rock Elementary School will be celebrating the completion of its modernization project on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The celebration was announced on Friday, Jan. 3 by Royal School District Superintendent Roger Trail in a press release. The community is invited to attend the celebration and view the improvements to the school facilities.
The date of the ribbon cutting is significant to Red Rock Elementary School. That is the day that Red Rock Elementary students returned to school after the flood that damaged the school on Jan. 7, 2017. The district received renovation funds from flood insurance, as well as state matching funds. The project has cost $16 million.
“I want to express my gratitude to the entire Royal community for supporting our schools,” said David Andra, Red Rock Elementary principal, in the press release. “After nearly three years of planning and construction, we are preparing to fully occupy the entire school building. I am very proud of the updates we have made to our school and am excited to celebrate with our students, staff and families.”

OTHELLO — The Othello School District is considering moving this year’s graduation date. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Jan. 2, the district said that the current graduation date of May 29 could potentially cause 23 students to miss the event because of sports.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association “shifted the sporting schedule this year which caused all sporting events to be pushed back one week,” said Dr. Chris Hurst, superintendent of the Othello School District. “This occurs every few years and is dependent on when Memorial Day falls.”
The district is seeking the input of parents, guardians and family members regarding changing graduation. They are asking that a two-question survey be taken. The survey asks if the graduation date should be changed and if it should be changed to Monday, June 1, or Friday, June 5. The information collected in the survey will be presented to the school district board of directors, who will make the final decision.
This same situation happened in 2015. Then-superintendent George Juarez used the same method to help the board make a discussion.
The survey can be accessed via the Othello School District’s Facebook page.
