ST. MARIES — Priest River wrestling had a strong showing at the Chad E. Ross Memorial Tournament this weekend in St. Maries.

The Spartans finished 10th out of the 14 teams that competed, but had three wrestlers place at the event.

Keith Poirier, Truxton Wilson and Hayden Sorbel were the three Spartans that medaled.

Poirier came out Saturday looking to claim first at 120 pounds pinning his first two opponents to advance to the championship match. In the final, Poirier took a 2-0 advantage over Coeur d’Alene’s Austin Smith before being pinned 2:15 into the match to finish in second place.

At 195 pounds, Wilson look primed to finish first in his respective class as well after pinning Coeur d’Alene’s Andrew Stockham 1:34 into his semifinal match. But in the first place match after taking an early lead, Wilson was pinned by St. Maries Kyle Siebert to take second place.

After falling in his quarterfinal bout to Lewiston’s Zander Johnson by pin, Sorbel battled back to make it to the third place match at 98 pounds. In that bout, Sorbel faced off with Johnson once again and got revenge pinning him at 2:12 to secure third place.

“The impressive win came from Hayden Sorbel again,” Priest River head coach Quinton Holbrook wrote in an email. “Two tournaments in a row coming back and wrestling an opponent who he had been beat by earlier in the tournament and beating him out for third and fourth at the end.”

Despite not placing, Aiden Troumbley, Devin Nessel, Austin Reeves, Bradley Bennett and Jesse Poisel all scored team points for the Spartans.

Priest River will head to Post Falls High School this Friday and Saturday to compete in the River City Duals.
