Remodeling nearly complete

A completely equipped hospital is now at the service of residents with the near completion of remodeling work on the old (Priest River Hospital) building, started last spring. Dr. Lower, resident physician, has moved his office to the new quarters from the Beardmore Building.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Old bank being renovated

The interior of the old Citizen’s State Bank building is this week being given a complete renovation. The building is now owned by Gus Naccarato.

70 Years Ago — 1950

School reorganization meetings set

As the date of the third School Reorganization election in Bonner County approaches, Jan. 16, the Bonner County Committee has scheduled a series of informational meetings in order to better inform patrons in outlying districts who have been unable to attend meetings held previously in large centers. There have been complaints that the public is uninformed about reorganization. Among others, meetings have been set for Meegan School, Priest River High School, Laclede School, and Lamb Creek School at Priest Lake.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Faces kidnap charges

Richard Raymond Burkeybile, of Spokane has been charged with kidnapping a Spokane cab driver and is in the Kootenai County Jail under $5,000 bond. Burkeybile was apprehended in Priest River last Wednesday morning by City Police Chief Geo. Binkley, Deputy Sheriff Mike Rose and Ronald Bruce, Idaho State Patrol, when the officers spotted the black and white Checker taxi as it passed through town. Cab driver Glenn M. Johnston told officers that Burkeybile forced him to drive to Coeur d’ Alene,

Sandpoint and Priest River.

Thrift Shop opens

The Priest River Thrift Shop is bulging at the seams with newly-arrived goods, according to Manager Mrs. Bill Crabtree, who announced the shop will be open from Monday through Saturday every week. The Thrift Shop is located in the Beardmore Building, next to the Bob Dow Insurance Agency.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Hooper hired

The Priest River City Council, acting on recommendations from the City Grant Administrator’s Office, has selected Doug Hooper, 32, of Spokane to fill the recently created office of City Planner.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Winter slow at the lake

Winter recreation at Priest Lake if off to a slow start due to lack of snow, according to Butch Perry, resource staff assistant at Priest Lake Ranger Station. Snow accumulations range from 4-8 inches south of Nordman and more than 15 inches in the northern portion of the district. Lack of snow and logging activities have hampered snowmobile trail grooming efforts.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Nordman postmaster retires

Claude Cary welcomed in the New Year with a retirement ceremony from the Nordman Post Office. Cary began working there as a clerk in 1975 and in 1976 stepped up to officer-in-charge. In 1978 He took over the reins as postmaster. “I came out of a logging truck into this,” said Cary. “It took me a while to pick it all up… You couldn’t ask for a more fun job and a more gratifying one.”
