Post Falls pressure too much for Lakeland
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 5 years AGO
RATHDRUM — Post Falls turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter, and was rewarded with plenty of steals, easy baskets and a convincing 67-34 victory at Lakeland on Tuesday night in nonleague play at Hawk Court.
Leading 30-22 at halftime, the Trojans (8-5) went on a 22-6 run over the majority of the period, with Lexi Heath’s steal, resulting layup and free throw putting Post Falls ahead 57-28 with 1:12 left in the third quarter.
“We started the game well, then they hit some 3s in the second quarter,” Trojans coach Marc Allert said of Lakeland, which outscored Post Falls 13-12 in the second period. “Our pressure got to them in the third quarter, and it got us some easy baskets.
“Our rotations were good on defense, and we did a good job on Katy Ryan, who’s such a force for them inside,” Allert added. “It was a total team effort on the defensive end.”
“Post Falls just played harder, they executed better, and they played at a level that we just, for whatever reason, couldn’t match,” said Lakeland coach Steve Seymour, whose team committed 14 first-half turnovers.
Heath had 16 points and Laney Smith added 11 for the Trojans, who travel to Lewiston on Friday to open 5A Inland Empire League play. Both hit three of Post Falls’ 11 3-pointers.
The 6-foot-4 Ryan led the Hawks (5-10) with nine points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Darby McDevitt added seven points for Lakeland, which visits Moscow on Friday in the 4A IEL opener.
Lakeland was coming off an overtime victory at 5A Coeur d’Alene five days earlier.
“If we thought by beating Coeur d’Alene we were there, we learned tonight we’re not there yet,” Seymour said.
