OTHELLO— Othello boys wrestling picked up the win in the home dual against Ephrata on Thursday night, 52-19.

Othello’s Justin Martinez opened things off with the 8-7 decision over fellow freshman William Flynn of Ephrata in the 106 weight class. At 113, Josue Sanchez got the pin against Victorino De La Cruz 1:31 into the second round of the bout to put the Tigers back ahead early, 6-3.

Forrest Roylance put the Huskies back in front for good, picking up the pin against Francisco Anaya 0:41 into the second round in the 120 weight class. Miguel Amenzola took the 4-2 decision over Ephrata’s Hudson Sager at 126.

In dramatic fashion, Othello’s Andres Deleon got the pin against Christopher Guerrero with just one second remaining in the first round of the 132 bout. Kelvin Sager took care of business for Ephrata at 138, picking up the 10-0 decision over Kyler Freeman.

Andrew Velazquez picked up the second first-round pin of the night for the Huskies 1:40 into the first round against John Shea IV at 145. Arturo Solorio would follow suit, pinning Corbin Sager 0:58 into the first round in the bout at 152 as Othello pulled ahead 30-10.

Nathan Garza pinned Ephrata’s Brian Olivera in the second round at 170, while Carter Mills held off Brandon Garza to take the 5-2 decision in the 182 weight class. Mac Laird picked up the pin 1:26 into the second round against Othello’s Eric Gomez at 195.

At 220, Othello’s Elijah Roylance took the major decision, 10-0, over Kevin Pelayo. In the final bout of the dual, two-time state champion Isaiah Perez quickly handled business with the pin against Lucas Tucker just over 0:30 seconds into the first round.

The Huskies pick up the win after facing powerhouse Toppenish earlier in the week. Othello head coach Rudy Ochoa II said the match on Tuesday exposed a lot about where his team’s at currently.

“It definitely exposes a ton, which is what you want before the postseason,” Ochoa said. “You want to see all your flaws and kinks. Toppenish, they came out hot and we were able to see some things that needed immediate attention.”

Ochoa said the team had a good practice Wednesday and before the dual on Thursday, applying some of the things learned earlier in the week.

After the win on Thursday over the Tigers, Ochoa said he was just glad to get some guys back from illness, and is hoping to bring back a few more against Moses Lake on Friday.

In early January, the Othello head coach said he feels the team as a whole has come a long way from where they were to begin the season.

“I’d say collectively, from the top to bottom of our lineup, if you followed us since the jamboree, we’ve just had a ton of growth,” Ochoa said. “We’re really excited and, hopefully, we can keep climbing and peaking towards the postseason.”

The Huskies will head to Moses Lake tonight for a dual against the Chiefs at 7 p.m. The Tigers head to Post Falls, Idaho, for the River City Duals.

Moses Lake 72, Davis 6

YAKIMA — All but one Chief recorded a pin and Moses Lake routed Davis 72-6.

The Pirates was nearly shut out, only winning the second to last match of the night.

“I felt like we were offensive,” head coach Jaime Garza said. “Right off the gate we attacked.”

In the lone decision of the night, Jonathan Tanguma beat Will Chichenoff 5-1. Moses Lake accepted four forfeits.

Moses Lake 18, Davis 10

YAKIMA — Moses Lake picked up a narrow dual victory against Davis 18-10.

“All the girls did a good job wrestling tonight,” head coach Javier Valdez said.

Manna Wu won a crucial 9-6 match in overtime.

Boys basketball

Warden 61, Connell 52 (OT)

CONNELL — Junior Martinez made a game-tying 3-pointer as time winded down in the fourth quarter and Warden beat Connell in overtime 61-52.

The Cougars scored 14 points in the extra period and made 8-of-9 free throws.

Kaden Skone scored a career-high 25 points with eight rebounds and three steals. Dreyton Martinez and Michael Egia scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Girls basketball

Warden 62, Connell 39

CONNELL — In a match-up between the league’s two top teams, Warden dominated Connell 62-39.

Warden led by 21 points at halftime and Kiana Rios scored 19 of her 26 points in the first half.

“We came out and played really fast and really aggressive,” head coach Josh Madsen said.

Brecka Erdmann and Rylee McKay scored 10 points each.

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake swept Ellensburg in a non-league match.

Haley Rogers bowled a 191 to lead Moses Lake in the first game and the Chiefs won 696-511. Kylee Christie (187), Rogers (180) and Sarah Devoll (170) led the Chiefs to a 743-576 win in Game 2.

Moses Lake took both baker games 104-82 and 127-117.
