Mercifully, it’s over.

Not the college football season, which still has a national championship game coming up one of these Mondays, we hear.

But the part of it that involves local teams is over, after a couple of dreary performances in bowl games.

Boise State helped its former coach bow out in style, getting trucked by Chris Petersen and the Washington Huskies 38-7 in the Las Vegas Bowl.

And Washington State, despite having several weeks to prepare, still couldn’t slow down Air Force’s triple-option in a 31-21 loss in the Cheesy Bowl played on a baseball field in Phoenix.

Naturally, Jason correctly predicted both results, while Mark foolishly thought both local teams would win.

That helped Jason build a 10-point lead heading into the final, bonus pick of Gridiron Guesses.

In that game, Mark’s San Francisco 49ers defeated Jason’s Seattle Seahawks (by an inch) 26-21, which counted as 10 bonus points for Mark and resulted in a tie for the season.

OK, not really.

Jason finished 43-17 on high school games, 41-9 on college games for a total of 84-27 (counting the bonus pro game).

Mark finished 41-19 on high school picks, 33-17 on college picks for a total of 75-36 (counting the pro game).

Jason wins for the first time in the three years of Gridiron Guesses, and collects the usual first prize — a prime rib dinner.

Mark limps home in second place, and settles for the usual runner-up prize — also a prime rib dinner.

OK, so maybe not.

Maybe next year.

For now, our special assistants will have to settle for some Milk Bones.
