At Charlo this past weekend, the visiting Red Devils posted mid-teens during a first frame surge by their trio of leading scorers as contrasted to a mere duece by the Vikings’ Levi Gaustad.

The Charlo offense awoke from their early lethargy and proceded to outscore Noxon the middle quarters, finally flipping the script on the scoreboard in their favor as they put their visitors in the hole.

Undeterred, the Red Devils carved into the deficit as they held the Vikings to a pair of field goals and a split of three trips to the charity stripe during the final frame to knot the contest at 40-40 to force an extra period.

The Vikings would struggle to craft an effective counter to Noxon tallies during overtime, falling prey to repercussions from a shift in momentum.

Charlo hosts Seeley Swan this weekend on Friday, then travels to Arlee on Saturday.

Eagles edged, inches from conference win

At Victor, visiting Two Eagle put four players in double digits against the host Pirates, but couldn’t carve into the multi-possession deficit.

This past weekend at Pablo in a quintessential cross county clash, the visiting Vikings and the host Eagles would both vie for their first conference win. The contest would see-saw back and forth. After tying at eight apiece, Two Eagle captured the first frame.

A Michael Brown triple would give Two Eagle a five-point edge heading into the final frame.

Charlo would close the gap with a pair of buckets, then overtake the lead 45-44. Back-and-forth the lead would go until Brown knotted the contest up once again at 49 apiece midway through the final frame. A Nate Clark deuce would break the deadlock 51-49.

Another deuce and a free throw would be countered by a pair of Eagle free throws, Charlo leading 54-51.

Forced to foul with time waning, Two Eagle put Charlo on the line. Both free throws would be missed, giving the Eagles a chance. But a pinball ricochet rebound would end up in Viking Tucker Love’s grip, precipitating another foul. He would net the back end of his pair, 55-53, with 6.8 seconds left to seal the win.

Pirate plaque preference Burger-larized by Bulldogs

At Smith Fields in Whitefish for the 2018 State A boys soccer championship, the Polson Pirates and the Northern A conference champion Bulldogs would put on quite a show in an energetic quest to claim the coveted state A crown last Saturday. This would be just the third foray to the championship match in the history of the Pirate boys’ soccer program, who hoped that the idiomatic expression “third time’s a charm” would play out in Polson’s favor.
