'Rockwell's America' at the MAC closes Sunday

"Norman Rockwell’s America" will close Sunday after logging the busiest holiday season attendance on record at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (the MAC).

The exhibition drew more than 13,000 visitors from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, 58 percent above figures a year ago during the same period. At least 15 percent traveled 200 miles or more to see one of the best-known and most beloved American artists of the 20th century.

"America" exhibits a remarkable collection of 22 oil paintings, seven charcoal or graphite studies, original posters and all 323 vintage Saturday Evening Post magazine covers spanning six decades. Many of the original works give viewers a chance to see Rockwell’s accomplished technique and superb craftsmanship, which can be overlooked in the more widely seen reproductions of his work.

“It was our busiest holiday season on record, exceeding all of our projections on membership, the gift shop and the café," said Wesley Jessup, MAC executive director. "Unfortunately, we can’t extend this popular exhibition as there is an extensive installation for the upcoming 'Pompeii: The Immortal City' opening Feb. 8.

"America" is organized by the National Museum of American Illustration. The exhibition has toured nationally and internationally. This is the first solo exhibition of Rockwell’s paintings to visit the Inland Northwest.

Admission prices range from $5 to $10 for youth and adults. Members and children younger than 5 are free. Individual membership packages range from $35 to $50 and include free admission for one year for all exhibitions. Dual and family memberships also available. A price premium will go into effect beginning Feb. 8 for "Pompeii: The Immortal City" ranging from $10 to $19.50 for adults.
