POST FALLS — It was a fight both Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls High expected, received and will get once again in a few weeks.

Saturday night, this round went to the Trojans.

Post Falls won five matches by pin to beat Coeur d’Alene 45-30 in the championship dual of the 23rd River City Duals tournament at The Arena at Post Falls.

On Saturday, Post Falls beat Timberlake (78-9), then beat Nampa (45-35) in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

“We knew it was going to be a tough division,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “There were six to eight really evenly matched teams here, so we knew it was going to be a dogfight for sure. Three or four of the top five teams in the Rollie Lane tournament were here this weekend.”

Post Falls was second at Rollie Lane. Coeur d’Alene was third, Nampa fourth, Lakeland fifth.

Roddy Romero (106 pounds), Ryan Graves (113), Lane Reardon (126), Isaac Jessen (132), Ethan Miller (152), Isaiah Laguna (195) and Tyler Cook (220) went unbeaten on the weekend for Post Falls, which has won five of the last six titles at the tournament. Post Falls has been in the championship dual every year since 2012, finishing runner-up in 2013, 2014 and 2019.

“I think our guys, we’ve been pleased with how they’ve been progressing along,” Reardon said. “We took that early loss to Lake City, and they’re a great program and earned a win in our gym. And our kids responded and did great at Tri-State and Rollie Lane, and so they’ve been progressing. They’re growing and we appreciate that they’re wanting to continue to get better.”

Christian Paniagua (98), Dom Jessos (120), Drew Roberts (138), Jackson Kohal (285) and Gunner Giulio (160) went unbeaten on the weekend for Coeur d’Alene.

“Those guys, they just wrestled and did their thing,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Some of those guys, we expect them to win most of their matches. It’s nice to see Paniagua go unbeaten. He’s made some nice improvements from last year to this year. He’s learned some technique and he’s not making the rookie mistakes anymore. He loves wrestling and loves being part of something, which says a lot about him.”

Coeur d’Alene beat Meridian 45-36 and Lakeland 45-38 in the semifinals to advance.

“Losing Nolan Randles in the Lakeland dual with a bad back hurt us,” Moffat said. “We could have been a little closer, and if we stay off our backs in a few of those other weights, we could have been closer (against Post Falls). Hopefully we can turn that around down the road. We’ve got to get in the practice room, work harder and get ourselves into better shape. Some of those weights, it just comes down to toughness. Post Falls is a good team, and take nothing away from them, they’re tough. We’ve got to get better in a few weights, and we will.”

Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls wrestle each other in another dual on Feb. 13 at Coeur d’Alene High.

Alex Edelblute (126), Riley Siegford (138), Rhonin Edwards (152) and Hayden Berger (195) went unbeaten for Lakeland, which finished third after beating Nampa 52-32 in the third-place dual.

Caden Hess (113), Matthew Whitcomb (182), Mahlon Clark (195) and Owen Hughes (285) went unbeaten for Lake City, which finished fifth.

Sandpoint, Mead and Medical Lake were scheduled to compete in the tournament, but pulled out due to road conditions. Newport, which competed on Friday, did not return on Saturday due to road conditions, according to Reardon.

St. Maries takes third

at Orofino Invitational

OROFINO — Dylan Sotin (113 pounds), Trysten Lockridge (152), Shaun Anderson (170) and Delbert Lambson (220) claimed championships for St. Maries in the Orofino Invitational at Orofino High.

Kobe Burris (120) and Sam Martin (138) were second, Kyle Sibert (195) third for St. Maries, which finished third with 165 points. Clearwater Valley won the tournament with 195 points.
