KELSO — The Columbia Basin put two wrestlers at the top of the podium at the Kelso Invitational, the largest girls wrestling tournament in the state.

Emily Mendez won the 110-pound championship; Othello was the highest placing local team in 19th with 83 points. Mendez outscored Alexxus Ramos of Sunnyside 8-1 in the championship bout. The Huskies’ Alexis Monday also took seventh in the 110-pound weight class.

Shannon Workinger of Quincy was the Basin’s other champion. Workinger was the Jacks’ lone placer, pinning her first four opponents to reach the final round. There, she edged Celese Zinn of Lakes 2-0.

Aaliyah Escamilla (100) of Warden and Bianca Johnson (115) of Moses Lake both took third place in their respective weight classes. Each wrestler lost in the quarterfinals before winning four straight matches for third. Angalee Beck also placed eighth at 155 pounds for the Cougars.

Teams scores: 1. White River 197, 19. Othello 83, 33. Warden 66, 39. Quincy 63, 59. Moses Lake 37, 67. Ephrata 31, 95. Royal 5.

Warden 3rd at Schmunk Invite

WARDEN — Warden had 12 placers to finish third overall at its Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational.

The Cougars were led by tournament champions Cason Cox (113) and Holden Haworth (160). Cael Cox (120), Brenton Cole (138), Nathan Mendez (152) and Eduardo Suarez (195) were tournament runners-up.

Othello’s Jesus Gonzalez defeated Mendez 14-2 to win the 152-pound bracket.

Team scores: 1. Mt. Baker 185, 3. Warden 166.5, 6. Othello 68.
