John Jacob Van Helden passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, surrounded by his family.
John was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, to James and Julia Van Helden.
He met his wife, Marian Rose Mercier, in high school, and they were married May 8, 1948. In 1951 they moved to Libby where they lived for 27 years and were blessed with eight children. In 1978 they moved to Manhattan, Montana, where John retired as postmaster.
John was an accomplished woodworker and built their beautiful home in Polson, along with numerous other cherished pieces of furniture. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and many other outdoor activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings, and his infant daughter, Kristina Rose.
John is survived by his wife, Marian, of 71 and a 1/2 years. He leaves behind seven children, Steve (Naine), Jeff (Jackie), Maria (Mike), Trina (Roy), Pete (Tanya), Joe (Laurie), and Terri (Austin). He was also blessed with 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation and rosary will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 14, at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan.15, at Buffalo Hill Terrace Chapel. Viewing will be 30 minutes prior to funeral services.
