MOSES LAKE — Joey Freidig was one shoulder down away from completing one of the more improbable comebacks on the mat.

Up against Elyan Jimenez of Eisenhower, Freidig scored a reversal and had his opponent on his back near the edge of the boundary. Jimenez’s second shoulder narrowly avoided the mat and he was able to win the match 17-5, but Freidig’s fight to avoid a surefire pin was commended by the crowd and teammates.

“Joey doesn’t have a lot of experience wrestling, but I can tell you one thing — he fought very hard,” head coach Jaime Garza said. “And there was three or four occasions where he was on his back and he was able to slip off there and kept on fighting so I really admire that about him.”

Freidig’s loss was his team’s last as Moses Lake routed Eisenhower 63-16. Moses Lake accepted three forfeits and recorded six pins in the dual.

“I thought some of our key guys went out there and wrestled well,” Garza said.

The Chiefs promptly took a 24-0 lead after a forfeit at 126 pounds followed by three straight pins by Hunter White, Camron Regan and Max Zamora. Zamora won by fall in the first round and held onto his “pin chain” until Everett Ashley put Kevin Robles on his back in the second round.

“I thought he (Ashley) went out there and had some great shots,” Garza said. “He really set the tone of the match.”

After a disappointing outing at the Tri-State Tournament, a motivated Zamora beat 2A standout Arturo Solario of Othello on Friday and made short work of his Tuesday opponent Kenny Littler.

“I don’t think Max was pleased with his Tri-State performance. I think that left a bad taste in his mouth and he wants to get that out so he’s been working pretty hard,” Garza said. “I think that’s been that motivating factor there is what happened at Tri-State.”
