South county roundup: Othello's Mendez wins Kelso Invite championship

KELSO — The Columbia Basin put two wrestlers at the top of the podium at the Kelso Invitational, the largest girls wrestling tournament in the state.
Emily Mendez of Othello won the 110-pound championship; the Huskies were the highest placing local team in 19th with 83 points. Mendez outscored Alexxus Ramos of Sunnyside 8-1 in the championship bout. The Huskies’ Alexis Monday also took seventh in the 110-pound weight class.
Shannon Workinger of Quincy was the Basin’s other champion. Workinger was the Jacks’ lone placer, pinning her first four opponents to reach the final round. There, she edged Celese Zinn of Lakes 2-0.
Aaliyah Escamilla (100) of Warden and Bianca Johnson (115) of Moses Lake both took third place in their respective weight classes. Each wrestler lost in the quarterfinals before winning four straight matches for third. Angalee Beck also placed eighth at 155 pounds for the Cougars.

Warden 3rd at Schmunk Invite
WARDEN — Warden had 12 placers to finish third overall at its Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational.
The Cougars were led by tournament champions Cason Cox (113) and Holden Haworth (160). Cael Cox (120), Brenton Cole (138), Nathan Mendez (152) and Eduardo Suarez (195) were tournament runners-up.
Othello’s Jesus Gonzalez defeated Mendez 14-2 to win the 152-pound bracket.
Othello is on the road this week for a double dual in Wapato and the Farm City Invite in Hermiston, Oregon.

Toppenish 63, Othello 47
OTHELLO — Frank Lopez scored 14 but Othello was unable to hand Toppenish its first Central Washington Athletic Conference loss. The Wildcats led by 10 at halftime and won 63-47.
Jorge Buenrostro and Patrick Azevedo paced the Huskies with 13 and nine points, respectively. Jason Grant was the focal point for the Wildcats with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Zillah 88, Wahluke 62
MATTAWA — Wahluke could not contain high-flying Zillah and lost 88-62.
Trenton Zirker scored a team-high 17 points for the Warriors. Mason Landdeck led the Leopards with 20 points.
Zillah stretched its lead out with a 22-7 third quarter margin.

OTHELLO — Othello could not find enough offense in a 50-27 loss to Toppenish.
The Huskies scored 13 points in the first quarter, but were held to six or less the rest of the game. Analee Coronado scored a team-high eight points.

Warden 62, Connell 39
CONNELL — In a match-up between the league’s two top teams, Warden dominated Connell 62-39.
Warden led by 21 points at halftime and Kiana Rios scored 19 of her 26 points in the first half.
“We came out and played really fast and really aggressive,” head coach Josh Madsen said.
Brecka Erdmann and Rylee McKay scored 10 points each.
