I’m always attracted to stories of people following their passion.

David Brubaker is a writer, director, actor and videographer who’s in the process of creating his first short film. His company, Semistupid Productions, focuses on commercial video work for clients although David has been making YouTube videos for four years for entertainment. The short film, “Hunted,” is his leap into the genre with the goal of entering the finished product in the West Sound Film Festival in Bremerton next month, with other festivals to follow. As soon as Hunted is complete he’ll begin another short film with a goal of producing ten by year’s end.

On Monday morning David and his crew were filming scenes at Bob’s 21 Club with other local locations and interior shots to come. He told me that when it was all said and done he wished his crew was a bit larger. I told David to embrace the challenges, the memory of which will bring a smile when he’s producing big budget feature films with cast and crews in the hundreds.

David graduated from Post Falls High School in 2012 and earned his degree in accounting at Boise State. Here’s hoping he’ll put that accounting degree to good use when tracking the profits from a successful career in the movie business.

On Jan. 9 my sister Janna Scharf, CHS Class of ‘74, received a private message via a Coeur d’Alene Facebook page that prompted her to post: “Someone in Kentucky found this class ring from Coeur d’Alene High School, Class of 2002, initials L.A.S. Help us find its owner!”

Over the next few days her post was shared 1,900 times which resulted in the ring’s owner being located.

Following sophomore year Lindsay Stilwell moved from Coeur d’Alene to Alabama but had already purchased a class ring. After several years in Kentucky she’s now living in Billings, Mont. She had no idea where or when the ring had been lost.

Janna connected Lindsay and the Kentucky finder via an exchange of phone numbers. Lindsay made the call and said that the man found the ring in an old car he was restoring and had held onto it for years. And in a serendipitous Facebook version of Lost and Found, after nearly two decades the former Viking will soon be reunited with a memento of her high school years and long ago friends.

When the Arctic Express hands us sub-freezing temps, make ice balls! One of my favorite projects this time of year involves filling regular size balloons with water and several drops of food coloring. Place outside for at least 24 hours until frozen solid then cut off the balloon for some bright pops of color in this winter white landscape.

Friday, in honor of the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center’s 15th anniversary, they will unveil a newly-designed logo, which was created by North Idaho College Graphic Design students.
