FSPW brings 'Wild' film festival to community

Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness celebrate their 15th anniversary by hosting the SYRCL Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour Program. On Saturday, February 1, ten films from the Festival will show at the Heartwood Center. The films echo the care for the wonders of nature and adventure that FSPW shows for the incredibly wild Scotchman Peaks. The event also marks the FSPW commitment to the future of Wilderness in the Scotchmans.
In “My Irnik,” a young Inuit father teaches his son about the value of shared adventures, exploration and his ancestral heritage. “Aiden’s Butterflies” features 11-year-old Aiden Wang, who has harbored and released endangered Monarch Butterflies since he was six. “Wild Olympics” follows paddlers Adam and Susan Elliott as they kayak, fish, packraft and explore the wild rivers of the Olympic Peninsula.
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival was started in 2003 by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) to celebrate their 1999 achievement of “Wild and Scenic” status for 29 miles of the South Yuba River. The annual event is held the third week of January in Nevada City, California.
The five-day Nevada City Festival features over 150 films, guest speakers, celebrities, and activists who bring a human face to the environmental movement. The home festival kicks off the world tour, and Sandpoint is one of the stops. National Festival partners include Peak Design, CLIF Bar, EarthJustice, Klean Kanteen, and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company.
“In recent years, the Festival’s On Tour Program has grown to more than 230 events,” says Sarah Muskin, WSFF On Tour Coordinator. “These support organizations and their community causes through outreach, fundraising, and education.”

Doors at the Heartwood Center open at 6:30 p.m. with the event starting at 7 p.m. The evening will also feature complementary appetizers sponsored by Eichardt’s and Williams, Schiller and Styer, a no-host bar from Eichardt’s, a silent auction and raffle.
