SPIRIT LAKE — They came into the game with nearly completely opposite records, but the underdog Timberlake Tigers hung with the visiting Lakeland Hawks before the Hawks tallied a pair of baskets late in the first half to build a 13-point halftime lead.

Then 4A Lakeland tossed in 28 points in the third quarter, and went on to beat 3A Timberlake 70-37 in nonleague play on Tuesday night.

Noah Haaland hit three of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 17 points for Lakeland (11-1), and Ammon Munyer scored eight of his 15 points in the deciding quarter for the Hawks.

“They just came out in the third quarter and turned it on,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “I thought we were playing good defense, but we weren’t getting out on their shooters.”

Carson Seay added 12 points, Ben Zubaly 11 for Lakeland, which opens 4A Inland Empire League play Friday at Sandpoint in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game.

Zach Yetter scored 10 points for Timberlake (1-10), which opens Intermountain League play Saturday at Priest River in the Battle of the Buck spirit game.
