Women's March set for Saturday in Sandpoint
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 5 years AGO
The fourth annual Women’s March in North Idaho will be Saturday, Jan. 18 in Sandpoint. This year’s theme is “Take Action!”
The free event will begin at 11 a.m. with a rally at Sandpoint Middle School, 310 N. Division. The march will follow the city’s paved community trail, with local police on site during the demonstration.
The march is part of a women-led movement resisting attacks against diversity, against the environment and public lands and against cuts to social programs that support citizens’ basic needs, according to a news release.
Three speakers will address the marchers. Rebecca Cleveland-Schroeder with Reclaim Idaho will speak about a new “Invest in Idaho” ballot initiative for funding K-12 education. Nancy Harris, a fourth generation Idahoan, is running for the U.S. Senate nomination to oppose Sen. Jim Risch.
Laura Tenneson with Western States Center, an organization that works to strengthen inclusive democracy, will offer ways citizens can oppose hateful messages and stop them from spreading.
Human rights groups from Bonner, Boundary and Kootenai counties, as well also there local organizations, will have tables offering direction actions for marchers. “Love Lives Here” signs will also be available for a donation.
People of all genders and walks of life are welcome to march.
“Our good brothers and families are welcome to march with us,” said Rebecca Holland, Idaho Women’s March Chair. “We all need to stand firm together.”
Marchers can pre-register for the free event at the North Idaho Women’s Facebook page. Participants are encouraged to bring signs expressing their feelings in “PG” terms, as well as rhythm instruments, small drums and shakers.
