Eleanore ‘Elly’ Kathryn (Haak) Goebel

Sept. 6, 1941 – Jan. 10, 2020

Eleanore “Elly” Kathryn Haak Goebel, 78, of Coeur d’Alene, was born on Sept. 6, 1941, in Leonard, N.D., to William Haak and Hazel (Haak) Marek. She passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, in Coeur d’Alene, with her four children by her side.

Elly grew up in North Dakota and graduated Chaffee High School in 1959 as valedictorian. While in high school, Elly excelled at basketball and played organ at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. On April 7, 1961, Elly married Wilbert (Willy) Clayton Goebel, in Wishek, N.D. Elly and Willy moved to Pinehurst, Idaho, in 1961, with Hazel and husband, Leo Marek. They lived in Pinehurst from 1961 to 1986, and Elly worked at Bunker Hill, and then Coeur d’Alene Mines, as an accountant. In 1986, Willy and Elly moved to Coeur d’Alene while Elly continued to work at Coeur d’Alene Mines. While working full-time, Elly always made sure to take care of her family and home.

Elly showed her love through giving. She sewed clothes for her children, prepared food and always made sure everyone ate. Elly continually made time for her family. She hosted Sunday dinners and BBQs frequently. Elly had a strong relationship with her husband, Willy, instilling the importance of family to her children. When Elly wasn’t working, her hobbies included cooking, watching cooking shows, Gonzaga basketball, sewing, camping and traveling — including to Costa Rica, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. She enjoyed baking, with “Heath Cookies” being her specialty.

Eleanore is survived by stepfather, Leo Marek of Kellogg, Idaho; son, Dale (Diane) of Athol, Idaho; daughters Nancy (Randy) Howard of Hayden, Idaho, Pamela Smith of Coeur d’Alene and Suzanne Adkinson of Post Falls, Idaho; sisters Elaine (Chuck) Pagliaroli of Odessa, Texas, Karen Kero of Medical Lake, Wash., Deborah (Rolf) Rodin of Hall, Mont., and Marilyn Marek of Kellogg; brothers Terry (Karen) Marek of Kellogg and Donald (Debbie) Marek of Pinehurst; numerous nieces and nephews; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Eleanore is preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert Goebel; father, William Haak; mother, Hazel (Haak) Marek; brothers Ronald Haak, Michael Marek, Larry Marek, David Marek, Daniel Marek; sister, Janice Haak; and granddaughter, Tiffany Goebel.
