ALASKA-CHURCH ABUSE

JUNEAU, Alaska — A review commissioned by the Archdiocese of Anchorage found credible evidence of sexual misconduct by 14 people who served in the archdiocese dating to 1966, a church leader announced Thursday. The findings were made by a commission that the archdiocese said included a former police chief and two former prosecutors, one of whom is also a retired judge. The commission was charged with reviewing personnel files of “clerics and religious men and women” who served in the archdiocese dating to 1966, as well as reviewing allegations of sexual misconduct of lay volunteers and employees reported to the archdiocese. ALASKA-ALEUTIANS AIRPLANE CRASH

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An air ambulance taking off from an Aleutian Islands airport experienced an unknown problem within seconds and made an emergency water landing in the ocean, the company's chief executive officer said Thursday. A pilot, a nurse and a paramedic survived with no serious injuries and scrambled into a life raft after the LifeMed aircraft crash into Unalaska Bay, said CEO Russ Edwards at a news conference. CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFTS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Wasilla man suspected of stealing catalytic converters from at least 21 vehicles has been charged with 52 felony and misdemeanor counts of theft, criminal mischief and trespass. Tristen Balthazore, 24, was arrested Wednesday, Alaska State Troopers announced. He was jailed at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and scheduled for arraignment Thursday. SUFFRAGE MEMORIAL-OHIO STATEHOUSE

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio's Statehouse would join a small number of others around the country with outdoor monuments dedicated to real women in U.S. history under a proposal Thursday to create a memorial to Ohio women who fought for voting rights. Currently, all statues of historical figures outside the Statehouse are of men, including Christopher Columbus, President William McKinley (a former Ohio governor), and seven Civil War generals including Ulysses S. CONDOMS-STATE SLOGANS

SALT LAKE CITY — An HIV-awareness campaign featuring condom wrappers with cheeky slogans that put a sexy spin on state pride met a quick end in Utah as the governor ordered the health department to stop distributing them. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert's intervention came hours after the designs became public on Wednesday. Herbert, a Republican, he understands the importance of educating residents about HIV prevention, but he does not approve of using sexual innuendo as part of a taxpayer-funded campaign.
