R. 5430, United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Implementation Act' - legislation to implement the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which was signed by all three countries at the end of 2018 with a revised version agreed to last month - with agenda including vote on a motion to waive the Budget Act regarding the resolution, followed by vote on its passage * The House of Representatives passed it 19 Dec, although, as well as the Senate, it also needs ratification in Mexico and Canada before it can take effect

Thursday, Jan. 16 12:00 PM Senate impeachment trial of President Trump formally begins - Impeachment trial of President Donald Trump in the Senate formally begins, with the chamber receiving the House of Representatives impeachment managers for the purpose of exhibiting articles of impeachment (12:00 PM EST) and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts swearing in senators (2:00 PM EST) * Follows yesterday's passage of a resolution through the House appointing and authorizing managers for the trial * After the formal start, a number of logistical elements need to be dealt with (including passage of a rules package, and submission of trial briefs) before it begins in earnest * The House passed two articles of impeachment last month, charging President Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, following an inquiry into 'the extent to which he jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with the 2020 election and by withholding security assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression, as well as any efforts to cover up these matters'
