A 28-year-old Rockford Bay man who allegedly pointed a rifle at several people at a residence south of Coeur d’Alene before he was arrested by a SWAT unit last weekend was released from the Kootenai County jail after posting $25,000 bail.

Evan D. Schroder is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, which each carry a maximum five years in prison and a fine of $5,000.

Schroder is accused of being drunk when he walked into a house around 11 p.m. on the 18000 block of south Watson Road and pointed a rifle at several people.

One witness told deputies she saw the scope’s red laser dot and left the house through a side door.

Others in the house told Schroder to put the gun away, and when he objected, stormed the 28-year-old and wrestled for the rifle. Approximately four rounds were shot from the .223 caliber firearm.

Another round was shot into the air outside the house — to clear the chamber — after the gun was taken from Schroder, police said.

Deputies said they found two holes in the floor of the house and two in the ceiling.

When the rifle was taken from Schroder he fled and a sheriff’s SWAT unit was called to the rural residence, according to deputies. Schroder lived behind the property in a trailer.

When he was arrested, Schroder told deputies he wanted to press charges against the people who took his firearm.

At a hearing this week in Coeur d’Alene’s First District Court, prosecutors said they would charge the defendant with three counts of assault, instead of battery — which is a charge often tied to physical injuries.

A magistrate Monday signed a no-contact order prohibiting Schroder from going near the alleged victims. A Jan. 24 preliminary hearing has been scheduled.
