EPHRATA — Ephrata boys wrestling hosted a trio of schools — Quincy, Prosser and Grandview — for a double dual at home on Thursday night.
The Tigers picked up a pair of team victories against Prosser and Grandview on the evening. First up the Tigers faced off against Greyhounds of Grandview, taking the dual by a score of 60-24.
John Shay, Corbin Sager and Lucas Tucker all picked up first-round takedowns in their respective bouts against Grandview. Shay was able to pick up the late victory with just eight seconds left in the first round in his matchup against Anthony Campuzano at 145.
Kelvin Sager and Carter Mills each picked up takedowns in the second round in their respective bouts. Five forfeits helped balloon the score, with the match victories at 5-4, still in favor of the Tigers.
Christopher Guerrero, Caleb McMullen, Francisco Anaya and Hudson Sager fell in their bouts for the Tigers against Grandview.
In the second dual of the night, Ephrata was able to pick wins where they needed, coming out on top, 51-30.
Mills picked up his second pin of the night 59 seconds into the first round in his bout at 182 against Ricardo Espinoza. Tucker made it two-straight first round pins with his victory against Alex Frias in the 285 weight class.
Kelvin Sager went the distance in his matchup at 145, taking his second win of the night on a 12-6 decision.
McMullen and Hudson Sager were both able to respond from defeat in their matches against Grandview with first round takedowns, both in the first 40 seconds.
Corbin Sager, Brian Olivera, William Flynn, Josue Sanchez Anaya fell in their respective bouts, while the Tigers took four victories on forfeits against Prosser.
Mac Laird and Kevin Pelayo did not wrestle for the Tigers, accepting forfeits in both duals.
Quincy picked up the sweep against their opponents as well, first defeating Prosser by a score of 42-35. In their second dual of the meet, the Jackrabbits took down Grandview 54-21.
Tigers head coach Patrick Mitchell said the experience gained with back-to-back matches is important helping his wrestlers learn to move on to the next match.
“It’s really important for the kids, especially if in one dual they run up against one kid with more experience, kind of has their number,” he said. “We’re telling our kids, you’ve gotta reset, refocus, rebound and on to the next match. That one’s kind of in the past, we’ll make corrections and learn from it.”
Mitchell said with so little time between matches, if his wrestler is still focused on the last match, he’s putting himself at a disadvantage coming in.
For the Ephrata head coach, freshman McMullen’s win in the dual against Prosser was one of the standouts for him. McMullen is a young wrestler who’s struggled to pick up wins a times this year, Mitchell said. McMullen picked up a big one against Prosser that the Tigers coach said helped propel his team.
“It was a tight victory, and we knew it was going to be a close one coming in against Prosser just because of how we match up with them,” Mitchell said.
With the postseason tournaments fast-approaching, Mitchell said he believes his team is still “climbing that mountain” as they try and reach their peak at the right time.
“It becomes one tournament at a time at districts, and it’s a tough district,” Mitchell said. “All you’ve gotta do is your job and you’ve gotta get through and on to the next week and then it’s anybody’s game if you’re there. If you bring it that weekend, you’ve got a good chance of going to state. If you don’t show up, you’re going home.”
Mitchell said he likes the way his team’s working toward the postseason at the moment.
