MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Coyotes will return to the rink this Friday for the 18U Winter Hockey Classic.

The three-day tournament will feature a host of teams: Moses Lake Coyotes, Coeur d’Alene Hockey Association, Seattle Junior Hockey Association Eagles, Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association, Tacoma Rockets, Midget 2 (the Greater Trail Minor Hockey Association), Cloverdale Midget 5, Castlegar Rebels and three British Columbia teams.

“The Winter Classic has been popular among all out-of-town teams due to the fun and unique atmosphere of our outdoor rink,” said Jen Hopkins, Moses Lake Youth Hockey Association tournament director, in a press release. “We really strive to make this tournament one that helps create lasting memories for the teams and for their families.”

The Moses Lake Coyotes are in Pool B and play their first game Friday at 5 p.m. against the Castlegar Rebels. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Moses Lake Ice Rink is located at 610 Yakima Avenue.

Play Hockey Like a Girl event scheduled for Monday

MOSES LAKE — Play Hockey Like a Girl, an event designed to encourage first-time female hockey players, will take place at the Moses Lake Ice Rink on Monday from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m.

The Moses Lake Adult Hockey Association is sponsoring the free event and USA Hockey Level 3 coach Rachel Applebaum is the class instructor. Applebaum recently finished an all-female development camp for USA Hockey. She has also helped the Tri-Cities girls hockey club for three years.

“The idea behind Play Hockey Like a Girl is to generate more interest among the ladies, the moms, the little girls and it provides at least one day where there’s no boys on the ice and it’s just them having fun,” said City of Moses Lake Recreation Supervisor Tom Los in a press release.

The event is open to female players ages four to adult with the first hour being a skills session before a hockey game.

Every participant will be entered into a drawing to win Tri-Cities Americans tickets and a bobblehad from the organization. Those in need of gear may contact Teya Porter at 509-431-1142.
