UW PRESIDENT

MADISON, Wis. — A University of Wisconsin System search committee was scheduled to hold a phone conference Friday to hash out what they'd like to see in a new system president. Current system President Ray Cross announced in October he will step down after the committee finds a replacement. By Todd Richmond. Developing.

POWER PLANT

MADISON, Wis. — State regulators have approved plans for a new $700 million power plant on the shores of Lake Superior despite conservationists' concerns that the facility will harm the environment. SENT: 300 words.

EXCHANGE-JUVENILE DETENTION ARTISTS

MADISON, Wis. — On the second day of a five-day painting process, Madison-based artist Jerry Butler stood back and watched two inmates finish up their 30-minute paint shifts while trying to keep their juvenile detention center uniforms free of stains. The artist and some 12 youth inmates came together to create a mural in the Dane County Juvenile Detention Center‘s admissions office, the first place youths see when they are admitted to detention. John Bauman, Dane County Juvenile Court administrator, said this is the sixth mural to take up space on walls within the detention center. EXCHANGE-STUDENT FOOD BAGS

MADISON, Wis. — Each Friday morning, people at Westminster Presbyterian Church take turns filling 50 green bags with food and juice boxes and bring them down the street to Thoreau Elementary School. The bags contain a breakfast, lunch and snack item for each of Saturday and Sunday and are delivered to student lockers, where students can bring them home to help their families eat over the weekend. The Weekend Food Bag program is new this year at Thoreau and was a community-led effort, school social worker Laura Glaub said. By Scott Girard, The Capital Times. SENT: 777 words, photos.
