POST FALLS — In his new, hopefully temporary role as point guard for the Post Falls High boys basketball team, junior Caden McLean dished out four assists as the Trojans cruised to a 66-37 victory over the Lake City Timberwolves in 5A Inland Empire League play Friday night at The Arena.

The erstwhile shooting guard still gets to shoot, and McLean drained six 3-pointers in 11 attempts.

Even more, the 6-foot son of Post Falls coach Mike McLean recorded his first in-game dunk, on a steal late in the first half.

Which of the three was he most proud of?

“Probably the dunk, and the assists,” said Caden McLean, who finished with a game-high 20 points. “Because 3s come and go every game. But the assists is what makes our team do well.”

With junior point guard Cole Rutherford out indefinitely, being treated for an ankle injury similar to a high ankle sprain according to Mike McLean, Mike’s son has moved over from the shooting guard position, and sixth man James Lee, a 6-5 junior, has moved into the starting lineup.

Caden McLean has point guard experience from his AAU team, Eastern Washington Elite.

“I have to be more of a passer than just a shooter,” Caden said. “I need to be able to drive more and kick, and I need to play defense on their point guards now,” Caden said.

Rutherford was injured in a win at Rogers last Wednesday. In the Trojans’ first game without him, they lost 52-49 last Friday at Lewiston — Post Falls’ first league loss since the 2015-16 season.

Friday night was Post Falls’ first game since the Lewiston loss.

“It’s different. Our primary ballhandler isn’t out there right now,” Mike McLean said. “So we have to have other guys step up and be the primary ballhandler, and that’s a challenge. Caden can get us where we need to be, it’s just a little different timing issue than when Cole’s there ... we’re just kind of a work in progress right now. We’re bigger (with Lee starting), but we don’t change what we do. We just have guys in different spots.”

Colby Gennett added 17 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots for Post Falls (13-3, 1-1 5A IEL). Lee scored all seven of his points in the first quarter, and also grabbed seven rebounds. Alex Horning scored seven of his 11 points in the opening eight minutes, and Isaac Ballew hit three 3s and added nine points for Post Falls, which was 10 of 23 from behind the arc, and 25 of 50 from the field for the game.

Lake City (9-4, 1-1) played without junior wing Jack Kiesbuy, out for a couple of weeks due to “health reasons,” T-Wolf coach Jim Winger said.

Horning had five points, Gennett four and Lee a three-point play as Post Falls jumped out to a 12-0 lead after 3 1/2 minutes.

Lake City switched to a zone defense and slowed the bleeding. Kolton Mitchell’s driving layin capped a 7-0 run that pulled the Timberwolves within 26-17 late in the second quarter.

But McLean’s steal and stuff, followed by a 3 by Gennett sent Post Falls into the locker room with a 31-17 lead.

Lake City kept battling in the third quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Chris Irvin brought the Timberwolves to within 34-29 with 3 minutes left in the quarter.

But Post Falls finished the quarter on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a pair of 3s from McLean.

Seth Hanson’s 3-pointer pulled Lake City within 46-34 with 6 1/2 minutes left, only to see the Trojans finish the game on a 20-3 spree led by McLean, who hit five on his six 3s in the second half, including three in the final five minutes.

Mitchell, one of three freshman starters for Lake City, led the T-Wolves with 13 points. Hanson added 10.

Lake City was 13 of 43 from the field.

Winger didn’t use the loss of Kiesbuy, or his team’s youth, as an excuse.

“I’m just really disappointed,” Winger said. “We weren’t prepared well enough, obviously. I just thought we played very soft; didn’t compete. Three times they gave us a chance to come back at ’em, and we kept handing it back. We’re much more competitive, more of a tough team than we showed tonight. Really disapointed. And the youth and all that has nothing to do with it. I just think we didn’t show up.”

Gennett, wing, moved inside the Lake City zone in the second half, scoring eight points but mostly drawing fouls on the T-Wolves.

“I thought Colby would be more of a handful in there,” Mike McLean said.

Post Falls plays host to Lewis and Clark today at 5.

Lake City returns to action next Saturday at home, also against Lewis and Clark.
