SANDPOINT — Sometimes in spirit games, it can come down to the team that makes the adjustment in the madness.

On Friday, it was the visiting Lakeland Hawks when it mattered.

Carson Seay scored 25 points for the Hawks in a 57-40 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Les Rogers Court.

Ben Zubaly scored 13 points for Lakeland, which also won the Paddle.

“They kept changing defenses and it took us a little bit to figure out what they were doing,” Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. “Once we did, and ran some things against it, we were able to make some adjustments off of that.”

The games was the league opener for Lakeland (12-1).

“There’s only a couple of league games anyway, so we don’t want to lose any of them,” Stockwell said. “It’s huge to get a win and sets a tone for the rest of the season. Next time we see them, it’s going to be a hard fought game. But this team has been able to take care of business pretty good.”

Lakeland travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Devon Johnson scored eight of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, but the shorthanded Vikings fell to the visiting Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League game at Viking Court.

Jace McKarcher scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, finishing with 21 for Lewiston (10-2, 2-0 5A IEL), which finished 16 for 21 from the free-throw line. Coeur d’Alene was 17 of 35 from the foul line.

“Lewiston executed and hit some big 3-pointers in the second half,” Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna said. “It was a tough one. We attacked the rim, and were strong with the basketball, but it’s hard to win when you shoot less than 50 percent from the foul line. Defensively, we didn’t give up a lot of open looks.”

Luke McLaughlin scored 11 points for Coeur d’Alene (5-7, 0-2), which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

George Forsmann scored 18 points for Lewiston.
