POST FALLS — Midway through the third quarter, with the score tied and his team in a 3 1/2-minute scoring drought, Lake City girls basketball coach James Anderson called timeout.

It wasn’t necessarily to remind his Timberwolves that his team was blessed with a 6-foot-4 junior point in Brooklyn Rewers, who is drawing recruiting interest from Division 1 schools in the West and beyond.

But ...

The ball went in to Rewers the next time Lake City had it, and she scored to put the T-Wolves ahead to stay. The next time down, her putback (after Lake City had thrown it into another player inside) and free throw capped a quick 5-0 run, and 5A Inland Empire League-leading Lake City went on to post a 46-33 victory over Post Falls on Friday night at The Arena.

“Clearly, that’s where we had the advantage,” Anderson said. “Brooklyn’s played so well in the second half of games all year, and she tends to get really aggressive in the second half, and scores the ball really well.”

Rewers finished with 20 points for Lake City (12-5, 4-0 5A IEL), which used a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter and open up a 35-22 lead.

“Post Falls did such a good job of being physical with us, and disrupting what we wanted to do,” Anderson said. “It probably wasn’t a very aesthetically pleasing game, but when you put together the run of what’s been going on, starting with the Fish (last Friday), and then being out until 1 a.m. Wednesday at Lewiston, and finals today. I know I feel exhausted; I’m sure the kids are exhausted. So, winning on the road in league play, no matter how ugly it is, in these conditions, we’ll take it.”

Lexi Heath scored 11 points for Post Falls (9-7, 1-2), which was 3 of 16 from the free throw line.

“Was that free throws or layups? Because I think we were about the same,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “I’m proud of the way they played, effort-wise. Defensively we did what we needed to do. We did a good job on Rewers; she’s just big, and we’ve got 5-6 and 5-8 trying to guard her.

“We’ve got two weeks to get taller,” Allert said with a laugh, alluding to the upcoming Region 1 tournament.

Post Falls plays host to Lewis and Clark today at 3:15.

Lake City returns to action next Saturday at home, also against Lewis and Clark.

COEUR d’ALENE — Madi Symons scored a game-high 23 points for the Vikings in a 5A Inland Empire League romp over the Bengals at Viking Court.

“Our girls are playing incredibly tough defense right now,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “After losing those few games in a row, we knew we had to get back to the culture of tough ‘D’ that leads to offense that we developed early in the season. We have a lineup that allows any player to bring the ball up and score quickly. The depth of our team is allowing us to play fast, because we are able to rest players. This team is starting to see their potential and are really buying into playing for each other.”

Skylar Burke scored 15 points for Coeur d’Alene (13-4, 2-1 5A IEL), which hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

Sandpoint outscored Lakeland 18-7 in the fourth quarter after holding a 37-36 lead after three quarters.
