OTHELLO — Othello girls wrestling hosted the 2020 Lady Huskie Invitational over the weekend, bringing in wrestlers from over 50 schools to compete.

The Huskies took third place as a team in the tournament, with Hanford and Sunnyside taking the top two places. Quincy and Warden finished in the top-20 at 14th and 18th, respectively.

Quincy’s Shannon Workinger took first place in the 155-pound weight class, taking down Amber Glove of Jenkins (Chewelah) 43 seconds into the third round to claim the top spot. Royal’s Alondra Morales defeated Sunnyside’s Maritza Espinoza to take third place in the same division.

At 115, Moses Lake’s Bianca Johnson fell 1:28 into the first round in her finals matchup against Liberty’s Maizy Feltwell to finish in second place in the tournament. Othello’s Iyazely Barraza defeated Prosser’s Cami Anderson with 33 seconds left in the second round to finish third in the same division, while fellow Huskie Mercedes Gonzalez took eighth.

Rashann Olsen of Ephrata fell to Walla Walla’s Annelise Whitaker in the first round of the first place match, finishing second in 140 weight class. In the 100-pound weight class, Warden’s Aaliyah Escamilla picked up the 5-0 decision to take third place over Wapato’s Unique Orozco.

For Othello, Crystal Elizarraraz finished eighth in the 105 weight class division, falling to Karina Garcia of Eisenhower :52 into the second round. Alexis Monday lost the 2-0 decision to Mead’s Kelsey Loeun to finish fourth at 110. Hazel Gonzalez finished sixth in the same weight class after falling with five seconds to go in the second round against her opponent from Wapato.

Lisbeth Vasquez took eighth in the 130 weight class for the Huskies, falling 21 seconds into the first round against Southridge’s Evangelina Morales. Leslie Rodriguez finished fourth at 170 after falling to her opponent to Ellensburg in the third round.

For the Warden Cougars, Alexia Hernandez fell to Hanford’s Selena Reyna half a minute into the first round to finish fourth in the 130 weight class. Quincy’s Brenda Salgado finished seventh in the 170-pound weight class, while Xochitl Tafoya finished eighth at 100.Ephrata’s Maria Tellez fell less than a half minute into the first round to finish seventh in the 235 division.

Quincy head coach Devan Silva said after the match that he expected Workinger to perform well after working with her the past few years.

“Things went about as planned,” Silva said. “It wasn’t very pretty, her finals match. But thats a part of this time of year. It’s finals week at school, our schedule gets really intense with travel and frequency of what we’re doing. We’re in the mat room one day, on the road the next, just boom, boom, boom.” Tafoya, Delgado and Workinger are wrestlers Silva said he’s kind of come to expect to perform at a high level, and help lead a young team. Gladys Reyes is a senior who joined the team in just December, who Silva said he was really proud of, finishing 3-2 in the tournament.

With his younger wrestlers, the Quincy head coach said he doesn’t expect them to be peaking in their sophomore season. Silva said he’s just looking for them to absorb all they can, win or lose, coming off the mat.

While Silva talked about the hectic nature this time of the season can bring, he said this is a pivotal point for the team as they move towards postseason.

“This is kind of our make em’ or break em’ period,” Silva said. “It doesn’t have to always be pretty, but a win’s a win, and coachable.”
