A 12-year-old from Spirit Lake allegedly involved in several burglaries in Spirit Lake, including one in which a handgun was stolen, was arrested Friday by Spirit Lake Police.
Police officer Heather McDaniel said investigators were attempting to find leads in several burglary calls this month, but it was a tip from a juvenile in Rathdrum that resulted in the arrest of the Spirit Lake 12-year-old, whose name was not released.
The 12-year-old is charged with grand theft of a firearm, burglary and obstructing police, according to the department, and is being held in the Kootenai County juvenile facility.
McDaniel said officers responded to a car burglary Jan. 14 in which a black, Springfield .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol was stolen. But the investigation turned up no solid leads.
A few days later, Spirit Lake police were notified by Rathdrum officers who learned from a juvenile informant that a 12-year-old may be the perpetrator of the Spirit Lake burglaries. The informant overheard a classmate bragging about thefts he had committed in the area of Massachusetts Street and North Sixth Avenue in Spirit Lake, which included the theft of a gun, police said.
Friends of the juvenile were interviewed and confirmed the rumors. The firearm was located at the juvenile’s home, police said.
The juvenile was arrested about 2 p.m. and transported to the juvenile facility where he was booked, McDaniel said.
