KELLOGG — Anchored by its defense, Sandpoint girls basketball squeaked out a 42-36 win over Kellogg on Tuesday night completing a season sweep of the Wildcats, the No. 5 ranked team in 3A, according to IdahoSports.com.
“For us to be able to get that sweep against a team that is in contention to go to state in 3A’s is a big deal,” head coach Will Love said.
The Bulldogs built a 24-12 halftime lead, but in the third quarter they hit a wall. Their shots weren’t falling despite a handful of them going about halfway down before choosing not to take a trip through the net.
This allowed Kellogg to go on a run and close the deficit to just 3 points entering the fourth quarter.
With about two minutes left, the Wildcats hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36-36.
On the ensuing possession, junior Bella Phillips came down and made a basket to retake the lead for Sandpoint. From there, the Bulldogs vaunted defense took over holding Kellogg scoreless the rest of the way.
Senior Maddie Morgan led the way scoring 12 points. Juniors Kaylee Banks and Hattie Larson added 6 and 9 respectively.
Morgan has found her shot recently and the Bulldogs are glad to see it.
“I felt really bad for Maddie because she was in a shooting slump and it just happen to last for seven or eight games,” Love said. “We knew that her shot was going to come and her teammates believed in her.”
Sandpoint (11-6, 1-0 IEL) heads to Lakeland 7 p.m. next Tuesday.
