SANDPOINT — The matchup for Super Bowl LIV is set and you know what that means, its time for the annual Bee Super Bowl Challenge.

It’s your chance to win $100 for just sending in a prediction on who will the game. Pretty good deal, if I do say so myself.

This year it’s the Chiefs against the 49ers or what some people on the internet are calling the Joe Montana Bowl.

While Montana, one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, will not be taking the field for either team in 12 days, the next potential NFL legend will be. His name is Patrick Mahomes and at 24 years old, some people already believe he is on track to challenge Montana and some guy named Tom Brady for the GOAT title.

With an arm like Aaron Rodgers and legs like Russell Wilson, one could certainly see why fans’ expectations are already through the roof.

But in the age of trying to compare every special athlete we see today to previous all-time greats and debate who’s better when one isn’t even close to finishing their career, I say let’s pump the brakes and enjoy the moment.

Sure, Mahomes can throw no look passes on the run with little to no effort, but are you aware of his one glaring flaw — he likes ketchup on his mac and cheese.

I know shocking, right? Makes you question his decision making.

But in all seriousness, this is a matchup any true football fan was dreaming about prior to the start of the playoffs.

The 49ers, who have arguably the best defense in the NFL this season, versus a gunslinger in Mahomes, who put 51 points on the Texans in three quarters.

This has all the makings to be one of those classic Super Bowls we talk about 50 years from now. Who knows, this could be the start of two competing dynasties with how young each team’s core players are. But we all know the NFL doesn’t produce a lot of those with the parity it showcases season to season.

Vegas and oddsmakers around the country are expecting a tight game as well with the line fluctuating from the Chiefs as 1.5 point favorites to a pick ’em. The over/under is hovering around 51.5 to 54 as everyone is expecting a much more high scoring affair compared to last year’s thrilling 10-3 Super Bowl between the Rams and Patriots (yawn).

As of Monday afternoon, the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas has Mahomes lists at even odds (1/1) to win the Super Bowl MVP. No surprise Mahomes is the favorite but those odds are crazy. My advice, stay from taking that bet but that’s sort of a no-brainer.

The hype and anticipation to see what Mahomes can do to the 49ers defense is well warranted, but I think a lot of people are sleeping on San Francisco. In fact, people have been all season despite them going 12-4 and cruising past Green Bay and Minnesota in the playoffs.

In my mind, the 49ers are the better team and if I were an oddsmaker I would list them as the slight favorite.

I mean they nearly ran for 300 yards in the NFC Championship. That’s called dominance.

But just because I think they should be favored, doesn’t mean I believe they will win. I’m not going to give my prediction yet, but I will soon.

I will also dissect some of the crazy prop bets later this week.

In the meantime get your picks in. Just email your prediction for each team’s score in the game, the winner and your choice for the MVP to dgreene@bonnercountydailybee.com.

On Super Bowl Sunday, we will put a master list of the picks in the paper so you can follow along during the game.
