Big second half lifts Timberlake past Kellogg

KELLOGG — Brooke Jessen scored 15 of her 21 game-high points in the second half for the Timberlake Tigers in a 50-31 in an Intermountain League win over the Kellogg Wildcats in a matchup of two of the top five teams in this week’s state prep girls basketball media poll at Andrews Gymnasium on Thursday.
“Brooke had a really good second half for us,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “I was really happy for the most part with our defense. Offensively, we didn’t play great, but we stayed consistent on the defensive end all night. Kellogg’s a good, athletic team. They played hard the entire night”
Jaron Figueroa scored 12 points — all on 3-pointers — and Grace Nearing had eight points, five steals and four rebounds for fifth-ranked Kellogg (11-5, 2-1 IML), which was missing two starters.
“We’re only rolling with eight varsity girls, and two of them were gone tonight,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “We did not rebound well, and it was one of our downfalls. We were just a little slow and weren’t getting organized. If we can hone in on those things, then we’ll be good to go.”
Taryn Soumas scored 10 points for third-ranked Timberlake (12-4, 3-0), which has won 31 straight league games dating back to Feb. 3, 2015.
Timberlake travels to Bonners Ferry next Thursday.
Kellogg hosts Priest River on Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore reserve Emma Whiteman scored eight straight points early in the fourth quarter as the host Vikings went from one point down to seven points ahead en route to the 5A Inland Empire League victory over the Trojans at Viking Court.
Whiteman finished with 14 points for Coeur d’Alene (14-4, 3-1 5A IEL). She started the run with a 3-pointer from the right side, then scored after a steal. After a Post Falls timeout, Whiteman hit another 3.
“That’s our depth,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “Any one of our girls can come in and give us good minutes. Emma plays really good defense off the ball, and she’s one of our better outside shooters.”
Skylar Burke scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the first quarter for Coeur d’Alene. Nakisha Matheson scored seven of her 11 points in the second quarter for the Vikings.
Katie Fleming scored a game-high 16 points for Post Falls (10-8, 1-3). Freshman Capri Sims, brought up from the junior varsity this week and who practiced just once with the varsity prior to Thursday’s game, added nine points for the Trojans.
“The second half we handled it (their press) better,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “But every time we made a mistake, they capitalized.”
On Tuesday, Post Falls travels to league-leading Lake City (12-5, 4-0), and Coeur d’Alene visits Lewiston (2-14, 0-4).
