Moses Lake defeats cross-state rival Lake Stevens

MOSES LAKE — Lake Stevens head coach Brent Barnes took exception to a takedown awarded to Max Zamora at the start of his 152-pound match against Wyatt Springer.
After a brief discussion with the referee, the match resumed with Zamora scoring again — this time right in front of the Lake Stevens bench.
“Now that’s a takedown,” Barnes said from his seat.
Moses Lake showed plenty examples of what a takedown was during a 49-25 win against sixth-ranked Lake Stevens. It was a signature dual win for a Chiefs’ regular season that was coming to a close.
Zamora eventually pinned Springer in the third round, capping six straight wins to give the Chiefs a 38-6 lead through eight matches.
“He (Springer) was the number two kid in the state at the weight class up so I just wanted to prove myself because I’m not ranked that high at my weight class so just wanted to bump up and see what the competition’s like up there (at 152 pounds),” Zamora said.
Moses Lake avenged last season’s loss to Lake Stevens emphatically, winning nine out of 14 matches and recording more falls than a previous dual against Wenatchee.
Both teams traded wins to start the evening.
Saul Salinas won by major decision against Theron Tate. At 113 pounds, Jacob Hubby pinned Jeremiah Martinez in the second round to put the Vikings ahead 6-4.
It would be their only lead.
After trailing 2-0 early, Jonathan Tanguma pinned Tyler Fouts to start a string of six consecutive wins that turned a 6-4 deficit into a 38-6 lead. Ryan Grubb, Hunter White and Camron Regan all won by fall in crucial matches.
Lerenz Thomas, who less than a week ago had lost to his matchup, squirmed out of a surefire cradle and held on to beat Caden Cauley 8-4. Cruz Vasquez and Everett Ashley also won by fall to nullify any Lake Stevens comeback.
“We took it to them, so I loved our intensity,” head coach Jaime Garza said. “We often times were the first ones to attack and I love where we’re at, man... There’s still quite a bit of room for improvement with several of our guys so I’m super excited at where we can be two weeks from now.”
